@edr Hello, Ed. Sorry to hear of your problems with the FAA medical. I still have one — I hope, actually I have an appointment with my AME this afternoon for a renewal — and did not have to sell N489C. I don’t think we own these airplanes, we’re just caretakers for the next person, and I was lucky to find Ray Ferrell, who will be just as diligent as I was. He has already upgraded the panel, switched to Clevelands, and rebuilt the gear. He plans to be at the Fly-In at Benton Harbor. So why did I sell? Well, in 2016 I flew 89C to Oshkosh and back to Flabob, then to our get-together in Creve Couer, MO, then on to Williamsburg VA to visit my son, then to Charlotte NC for another aviators’ gathering, and so on. I noticed that x-country flying just wasn’t as much fun as it used to be, basically the same hour over and over. I’ve flown 89C to most of the lower 48 in my 43 years with her. I thought maybe it was time to move to a simpler, less capable ship better suited to local flying on a pleasant afternoon. My mind was made up when I went to Oshkosh 2017 on Southwest Airlines. I was sitting at FL 350, munching my complimentary peanuts, and idly looking out the window at KS or NE, when I noticed something peculiar about the shadows of the scattered Cu. With the aid of my watch, I timed the shadows over the section lines, and sure enough, there was a 15-20 knot HEADWIND, and we were going EAST! So, had I been in 89C, it would have been hot and bumpy, I would have been bucking a headwind, and it would be costing a lot more than SWA. That’s the moment I made up my mind.
