2020 Fly-in Verde Canyon Railroad

Traveling first class aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad

Despite the challenges of 2020, the Meyers Aircraft Owners managed to successfully host a small gathering in September 2020 for a fly-in at KSEZ in Sedona, AZ.  Attendance was down from previous years due to COVID-19, Hurricane Laura, and, the western wildfires. We hope that those members who could not attend are doing well. They were definitely missed!   Those lucky enough to attend did get an incredible chance to enjoy Sedona’s beauty, pleasant weather, and a chance to reunite with old friends and make new.

Four of our 200’s made the journey to KSEZ and a fifth 200, N31CC (hangared in Sedona) was also present for the fly-in.  The group was greeted by MAOA president, Ross Warner, III who arrived in N2988T with his son, Young Ross, and Garry Elghammer.  Jay McLeod and TC Grommer arrived in the newly restored N2992T to claim the flagship award for 2020.  Hugh Mattern arrived in N2961T and Steve Bauman along with his wife Miles arrived in N2989T.  Dan McLeod, Dave Smith, Bob Matlock, Steve Freeman, Mary LeFevre along with her daughter, Diana all arrived via commercial airlines.  Don and Marie Petty drove in for the event and Kevin Klein is one of the Sedona, AZ locals.

One of the highlights of the fly-in was a scenic trip aboard the Verde Canyon Railroad.  We were able to remain “socially distant” from the other passengers with our own private first class car that included a bar and bartender!  The Meyers Aircraft parked on the ramp at KSEZ generated a lot of interest amongst the local flying community.  Three local pilots along with their wives joined in our Saturday night banquet at The Relic’s Restaurant.  It was really great to include these new friends in our group.  For some of our members attending the fly-in, this was their first trip to Sedona and gave them the wonderful opportunity to discover the history, scenery, and beauty of the Sedona area.  We are grateful to all those who made this fly-in a success despite the many challenges that were faced.

Looking forward to this year, we are planning to gather in September 2021 in Fredericksburg, TX.  Our original plans to visit Iceland have been postponed until 2022 due to the restrictions currently in place from COVID-19 on international travel (wwwnc.cdc.gov).  Hopefully, things will be back to “normal” for 2022!  The dates for Fredericksburg will be Wednesday, September 22, 2021 through Sunday, September 26, 2021.  We will be flying in to Gillespie County Airport (T82) and our host hotel will be the Hangar Hotel adjacent to the runway ramp of T82.  For reservations, please call the Hangar Hotel at 844-596-2300 and mention that you are with the Meyers Aircraft group.  Our negotiated rate is $129/per night for Wednesday and Thursday and $169/per night for Friday and Saturday.  Current plans for the event are a fly out to the Old Kingsbury Aerodrome Airport to visit the Pioneer Flight Museum (www.pioneerflightmuseum.org).  For more information about Fredericksburg, Texas, please visit:  www.visitfredericksburgtx.com.  Additional details regarding the fly-in will be forthcoming.

Safe travels everyone and we hope to see you in September!
