ParticipantGents, 196M just came out of annual after being AOG for over 3 months. It started with an oil leak that was getting worse and I finally grounded her in late June as the annual was due as of July 1. Dean S. and I have been e-mailing back and forth but I thought I would share the experience to the wider group. I also replaced the seats and will share that in the appropriate Forum.
The engine is a Factory reman IO 520 with about 300 hours since back in service January 2017. Until this spring, it was very tight with no leaks. And then a drip started n the nose area that got progressively worse. Not to the point of losing a significant among of oil but just a nuisance and it was leaving the engine area and nose gear area an oily mess. At least the metal was being protected… So what was found was a crack in the oil cooler, and also the gaskets for both the oil cooler to the mounting plate and mounting plate to the case had failed. Oil cooler went out for OH and the gaskets replaced. The first new oil cooler gasket also failed and the 2nd one appears to be holding.
One thing noted that may have had some impact. The prop was really out of balance and who knows, it may have contributed to the oil cooler cracking with as much extra vibration that was occurring. The metal shrouds up front in front of the oil cooler were also cracked and had to be refabricated (A Bo is very similar to what the Meyers uses and my mechanic actually had the hardware and it is definitely more robust).
Fingers crossed that this has been resolved.

ParticipantHi Ed,
I found the upper intake mount bracket broken on my plane. Caused some vibration. Fixed it but now we chase other problems, like a leaking F&M adapter and a leaking valve cover.
Keep the spirit up.

ParticipantThomas-my F&M continues to leak and now the SB has turned into an AD. I am going to take one more shot at securing it and if it still leaks-probably go to an Airwolf.
Best-
Ed
