Dick, yes, boots were used, primarily, to keep dirt out of that bronze trunion bearing around the shock strut. Barg has the pattern for the boot….. somewhere.

Mystery solved. Mark sent me a pic that I sent to my AP/IA and here was his feedback:
‘Yes, it attaches to #5 cyl rocker cover and goes over to top of oil cooler, like a anti-vibration arm.’

I replaced mine with a whelen LED beacon after it when belly up. it was Waaay brighter. :/

Here is an interesting article from the AOPA newsletter. It was buried way at the bottom and you may have missed it. They are questioning a go/no go with an inoperative rotating beacon; even if strobe is operational and came up with a no go decision. My beacon is GONE. Removed decades ago.
